I just went back through my statement of intent for McGill and deleted two out of every three uses of “I hope”, “I feel”, and “I believe”. Makes it sound all wishy-washy. Like that socially-conditioned tendency to apologize when someone else walks into you.
I do the same thing in my writing. I always used a lot of words like “supposedly” “apparently” etc. and...

I just met John Hodgman, Jonathan Coulton, and Meaghan. Ironically, meeting Meaghan was the most awkward since it’s a little hard to not sound a bit creepy when you introduce yourself to someone you recognize from the internet.
