Tumblr Popular Stuff

(Warning: this post contains 80% rant/rave and 20% self-promotion.)

Looks like the Tumblr folk are expanding the radar functionality and have given it a pseudo-dashboard interface. But beyond being able to see the full post, including notes, this new view still doesn’t address the reasons I created What’s On Tumblr, namely getting the radar content actually in your dashboard (not just looking like it) and being able to browse older content. (Seriously, the random page link is a great time-waster.) On the other hand, they did add two new views which are interesting. One is ‘Most Popular’ showing the posts with the most notes but it’s unclear if this is all time or just recently. The other is ‘Upcoming’ which I presume is the feed the radar editor sees of recently popular posts. You’ll notice there’s nothing in there with less than 5 or 6 notes. (As a note, I’m pretty sure the radar editor can manually promote something to the radar, hence why you’ll sometimes see things there with less than 5 notes.)

Anyways, I do like the new views and I’ll eventually switch WhatsOn to feeding off that page because it will allow for a far simplier script and fix a problem that’s been cropping up recently. Until it’s officially supported, if you want radar content inline with all your dashboard content, WhatsOn is still the way to go.
