Random story of the day. My younger sister was on a couple episodes of Sesame Street one year (I believe 1996) and got invited to the wrap party at the end of the season. I wish I got invited every year because it’s hilarious. Beyond the requisite holiday sing-alongs they show a blooper reel from the year but the higlight is that they perform skits either mocking themselves or just completely out of character (some are very not kid-friendly). I remember one skit about Elmo becoming a huge dick after he got popular (complete with cell phone, sunglasses and beating the crap out of Kevin Clash, his puppeteer and voice) and another about a singing drunk homeless puppet.
I can’t find much online about this outside of this this NYT article that describes it as a “closely guarded secret about Muppet culture.” I vaugly remember my mom videotaping the whole thing, I wonder if that’s worth anything…
Bonus Fact: While on set, pupeteers never break character, even when talking with the director.
